Treatment Content

The center’s drug abuse treatment model delivers general treatment courses based on Statute of Rehabilitation Penalty, conducts short-term skill training courses and provides psychosocial drug abuse treatment services cooperating with medical units since 2006. The treatment contents are as follows

General Treatment Courses

The drug abuse treatment courses are implemented in three different phases called adaptation, psychological guidance and social adaptation. According to ’Notice of Drug Abuse Treatment Center’s Phased Treatment Courses’ formulated by Ministry of Justice, the center plans adequate courses and evaluates the teachers’ qualification periodically to ensure the teaching quality. The objectives of each phase are as follows:

Adaptation Phase: The purpose of treatment is to cultivate the inmates’ physical strength and persistence as well as enhancing their confidence of drug abstention. The contents of treatment courses highlight the life regularity and attendance to the courses.

Psychological Guidance Phase: The purpose of treatment is to activate the inmates’ motives of drug abstention and will of rehabilitation, to assist them overcoming the psychological dependence on drugs. The contents of treatment courses highlight the life regularity, the correct knowledge about drugs and attendance to guidance courses.

Social Adaptation Phase: The purpose of treatment is to rebuild the inmates’ interpersonal relationship and problem-solving abilities, as well as to assist them returning to the society. The contents of treatment courses highlight the inmates’ life regularity, knowing how to use social resources and attendance to the courses of social adaptation phase.

Skill Training Program

In order to assist the inmates to learn skills which are helpful for them to find jobs or start enterprises after they are discharged from the center, the center invites Sindian, Sanchong and Banciao Employment Services Station, as well as the Northern Training Center, Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training, to deliver the employment courses. Furthermore, the center cooperates with Shi-Lin, Taipei and Banciao Branch, Taiwan After-care Association, to hold variety of short-term skill training courses for inmates to sign up voluntarily. Through the learning process, the members in the courses can approve themselves again and get the sense of achievement. The skill training courses held presently are Gardening, Modern Light Meal, Healthy Vegetarian Diet, Chinese Food Made from Wheat, Car Beauty, Funeral Services, Bicycles Repair, Arts and Calligraphy.

Mandatory Psychosocial Drug Abuse Treatment Program

Mandatory Psychosocial Drug Abuse Treatment Program processes the personalized individual and group treatments based on the inmates’ individualized needs. After the inmates are taken in, they have to go through the intake investigation, psychological assessment and assessment in social work. According to the inmates’ needs, physical and psychological state, the center makes the individualized and systematic treatment plans. Each inmate has to complete at least six sessions of individual treatment and two phases of group treatments before they are released from the center. The treatment data will be filed for investigation after the systematic treatment program is completed.

The subjects of the group treatments in the program include life adjustment/emotional support, physical/psychological health education, emotion management/stress coping, self-exploration/values clarification, trauma therapy/life growth, motive enhancement/problem solving, psychotherapy of insomnia/ relaxation training, strategies for drugs abstention/relapse prevention, interpersonal interaction/gender relationships, family relationships/family therapy, career planning/living skills, self-affirmation/self-identification etc.. The group treatments process 1.5 to 2 hours for each session, one session for a week and 6 to 12 sessions for one phase. It’s expected to provide more integral and deeper treatments through the diversified group therapies.

Follow-up Guidance

The inmates’ case managers will follow them up by calls regularly, and give them care and assistance depending on their needs to help them return to society smoothly. The inmates will be followed up at least by 3 calls. The first call will be given between one to two months after the inmates are released. The second call will be given one month after the first call is taken. The third call must be given one month after the second call is taken and 5 to 6 months after the inmates are released. The contents of follow-up are as follows:

Residence: the case managers consider how the ex-inmates get along with their family, and how complicated their living environments are etc., and help the clients in needs to solve their living problems

Work Condition: the case managers call to hear about if the ex-inmates are employed or start an enterprise stably. If they are still looking for works, they will be provided the employment or vocational training information, or be transferred to employment services stations and get help from the stations. 

Social Adjustment: the case managers assess the inmates’ sources of economies, physical and psychological condition, lifestyles and stability of emotion. If they discover anyone not adapted to the society, they will provide the related social resources and refer them to social services institutions to help them solving problems.

Integrated Social Resources Treatment Program

In order to promote and enrich the contents of guidance, the center cooperates with the social resource groups actively to give the education in classes, and hold skills training, the recreational and family visiting activities. The social groups and institutions involved are as follows:

Religion groups: the religion groups educating inmates in class teaching include New Hope Church, Christian Born Anew Fellowship, Baptist Church, World Maitreya Great Tao Organization, Buddha’s Light International Association, Tzu Chi Foundation, Catholic Libertas Foundation, Catholic Prison Services Party.

After-care Association: The branches of After-care Association which assist in skills training and employment guidance include Taipei, Shi-Lin, Banciao.

Employment services: The institutions assisting in employment lectures and providing information include Vocational Training Center of New Taipei City Government, Sanchong, Sindian and Banciao Employment Services Stations of New Taipei City Government.

The medical institutions :The medical assisting in class teaching, individual and group treatments include Bali Psychiatric Center, Public Health Center of Sindian District Office, New Taipei City Government, Drug Prevention and Control Center of New Taipei City Government.

Social services: The social service organizations assisting in class teaching and volunteer services include Association for No Crime, Garden of Mercy Foundation, Taiwan AIDS Foundation and Red Heart Association.

Business groups: Taipei Business Office of Chunghwa Telecom is in charge of sponsoring the call visiting activities for inmates.

Professionals: The professionals assisting in individual and group guidance include 13 counseling psychologists, 3 clinical psychologists and 3 social workers.
